Welcome to Urban Farm Sista. My name is Nadia. I created this site to introduce you all to the marvelous world of gardening/farming. In my personal opinion I feel everyone should know how to grow their own food and learn sustainability.
So here is a little background information about myself. I have always, from a young age, had an interest in animals, insects, science and technology. Being born in the city of Cincinnati I was never exposed to farm life but for some reason I always gravitated towards it. So, when I graduate from high school I pursued a career in agriculture. I graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. My major was Animal Sciences and I minored in entomology.
It has always been a dream of mine to teach underrepresented youth and adults about agriculture. One thing I learned from majoring in agriculture is that there are not many minorities pursuing this field.
I often question why but I had to think back when I was younger. There wasn’t anyone coming to my school informing me about this field. It wasn’t until I went to college that I found out about groups like 4-H and FFA. These groups were not talked about at my schools. So, I can kind of see why there are few minorities pursuing this major. I decided that I would bring the farm to the city. Each fall I have Fall Festival Block Party. The most exciting part is when the horses show up and everyone is allowed to ride them as many times as they want to. I love seeing the children’s faces when they are on that horse. I know without this festival most of them would have never had this opportunity. So it’s time for me to take that fall festival to the next level. It’s time to start a community garden.
When someone says agriculture the first thing that comes to mind is a farm with some animals and crops. Well yes, this is part of agriculture but their are also other areas: Agronomy, Horticulture/Floriculture, Animal Sciences, Soil science, Entomology, Plant pathology, Food technology, Plant breeding and genetics, Agri extension, Agri engineering, Agri economics, Forestry, Aquaculture etc. Did you know that the fuel you fill up your car with has ethanol in it? Do you know where ethanol comes from? CORN. The food you eat comes from agriculture and probably some of the clothes you have on right now do also. So without agriculture we would be helpless.
